Wellington artist Narina creates her pop-surrealist portraits of precious wee girls using acrylic on canvas, and one of her trademarks is using real wallpaper
as a background for added texture and depth. She began painting the girls to help deal with the pain and grief
of losing a sister when she was young, and these memories of a childhood touched by sadness are reflected in the enchanting characters she creates.
She says: "I love creating something beautiful but the real reward for me is when people are touched by them and recognise that they’re not just pretty pictures but special pieces that come from my heart. I love the saying ‘sometimes out of great tragedy comes great beauty’".
As each wee girl comes to life, Narina’s attachment to them intensifies, however she hopes that wherever they end up they’ll be loved as much as she loves creating them.
Originally from Auckland, Narina is self-taught and has had solo shows at cafe’s, salons and boutiques in Auckland and Wellington, and is regularly selected to exhibit in the NZ Art Show. She now calls Wellington home where she continues to produce her truly precious girls.
I love nothing more than creating a customised piece of art that will be treasured forever.
If you're able to provide photos of your child and/or pet, I will work from those to capture their likeness in my own style. However, I can also just do hair and eye colour to match if that's easier for you.
You can provide as much input on colours, pose, background etc as you like. Its really cool to personalise the piece as much as possible.
You could include a favourite toy, setting or item of clothing. maybe something to symbolise what they love to do. Or you can leave it up to me to come up with something awesome and unique just for you!
I'll get your approval on the final sketch before I start painting and provide updates throughout the painting process, during which your feedback is welcome!
Some of my works have wallpaper used as a background. If you like this option, the painting will cost a bit more as I tend to love very expensive ones!
